Baby quilt - deer

i finished this quilt earlier this month, and decided to use this nice relaxed sunday to update the blog.

this quilt pattern was drawn and sent to me by usha. i traced the pattern for each category (grass, flowers, deer, clouds) on fusible interfacing and then ironed it on to the fabric. tried my hand at machine applique for the first time, and though far from perfect, i am quite pleased with the final product. she sent me a total of 9 drawings of the same kind, and it's going to be fun working on these over the year.

the middle layer for this was an old mangalgiri sheet, and a 3x4 feet piece of blue-and-white-checked shirt fabric made up the backing. i have machine-quilted the four corners, and the clouds (though not very well!)

learnings for the future - the background areas had no need for the fusible material, and this resulted in some stiff, and some very soft, areas. i had to remove all of it. i will not use fusible interfacing if it is to be used for only some parts of a whole, as it is very tough to remove later. shall definitely use freezer paper or maybe even go back to the system of ordinary paper and rough tacking.
